Cold Weather Care for Your Dog

weimaraner-1381186_960_720Brrrr – it’s cold outside! It looks like winter is coming sooner than we think, which means we need to prepare our pups for the cold weather and snow! Aside from the obvious breeds that are biologically bred to endure the cold such as Siberian Husky, St. Bernard and Chow Chow, other breeds need to be acclimated to the colder weather.

First step in preparing your dog for the cold is to be sure that your pet goes outdoors during mild weather so that his coat and body adapt to seasonal temperature changes. This allows their coat to thicken, making it easier for them to withstand cold temperatures.

Dog coats should be brushed and combed more often during winter months. A dry, clean and fluffy coat is more effective in keeping the dog warm than a wet and dirty one.

It is important for your pets to have a sufficient thickness of flesh prior to and during winter, since muscle mass and fat provide body insulation. If a dog shows signs of poor muscle mass and nutrition than be sure to increase their food intake so they can put on more weight.

Preparing your pup for the cold winter months is extremely important, especially if your dog enjoys running around and playing in the snow! Be sure that they are always properly fed, have enough to drink and their coats stay dry and brushed.
