Thanksgiving is a wonderful time full of family, food and giving. While we encourage generosity during this special time, pet owners tend to become overly generous with their pets. This usually means that pets will be getting lots of table food scraps and treats. Sometimes, however, too many treats can lead to injury or illness for our pets.

Here are some important tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday:

  • Avoid fatty foods. Too many rich and fatty foods can lead to medical conditions such as pancreatitis or gastroenteritis within your pets. In addition, it can also lead to upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting.
  • Bones, while a good distraction for your dog, are not the safest thing for them to chew on. Certain bones, if swallowed, can lacerate or obstruct your pets’ internal organs.
  • Popular Thanksgiving foods such as onions, grapes, nuts and chocolate are not good for dogs to consume, try to keep them as far away from your pets as possible.
  • Keep an eye on your trash! With all the leftover food, your trash is bound to fill up. Don’t leave it out in a place where your pet can reach it. Rotting food and miscellaneous items from the holiday can cause severe issues to for your pet.
