Halloween Safety Tips for Dog Owners

dog-782498_960_720Halloween can be an exciting and festive time of year for those of all ages – including your pets! Here are a few tips on how you can have fun with your pets this Halloween, but also keep them safe too!

  1. Candy should always be kept out of reach of your pets. Dog owners should particularly be alert for any signs of chocolate poisoning around this time of year. Symptoms of this may include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate and seizures.
  2. Dogs are curious creatures by nature, so be sure to keep pumpkins and other types of Halloween decorations out of reach. Should they get too close, they run the risk of burning themselves or knocking it over and causing a fire.
  3. It is fun dressing up your pooch, and while it may be exciting and cute for you, your pet may not feel the same! Be sure that the costume is the proper size for your pet, and if they seem distressed, allergic or show abnormal behavior, consider letting them roam free!
  4. Not only will trick-or-treaters constantly be at your door but they will also be dressed in unusual costumes. This, of course, is scary for our furry friends! Dogs are especially territorial and may become anxious, so putting your dog in a secure room away from the front door will be best for both your pet and your guests!
