5 Winter Exercise Tips For Your Dog

dog-1194087_960_720Yes, it is very cold outside and the days are shorter. No, that does not mean your dog no longer needs his exercise! Not only is it vital for a dog’s physical and mental wellness, exercise is also a crucial part of the relationship between the Pack Leader (that being you) and dog.

Here are 6 winter exercise tips for you and your dog!

  1. Indoor games are just as fun as outdoor! Try playing a game of hide and seek throughout the house. Hide your pup’s favorite toy or treat around the house and have him search for it! The game can tire out your pup, as well as teaching him basic commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ while you go hide the treat!
  2. Create an indoor obstacle course. Come supper time, rather than putting the bowl of food down and letting your dog have at it, make it fun by creating a small obstacle course and the finish line is his bowl of food!
  3. Indoor walking. There are treadmills on the market designed specifically for dogs. But if you cannot afford one of these, use a regular treadmill – just be sure to take the right precautions. Familiarize your dog with it first, and start off slowly. From there you can gradually fasten the pace depending on your dog’s comfortability!
  4. Sign your dog up for a class. The winter time is the best time to sign your dog up for basic obedience classes. You and your dog can learn basic commands, proper training tips and it is also a great way to socialize your dog!
  5. GO OUTSIDE. Most bigger dogs love snow, and they can get a great workout by plowing through it. Spend 30 to 40 minutes in the snow, and your dog will get a workout that leaves them exhausted and content. Don’t forget to be sure to wash your dog’s paws to clean off any salt!
